ENTRY

Mareep is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation of games, known formally as the Wool Pokémon. It is a small, quadrupedal creature built along the lines of a domestic lamb, standing well below an adult human's waist. Its body is almost entirely covered in thick, cream-coloured fleece that gives it a rounded, soft silhouette. Four short blue legs extend beneath that wool, ending in small hooves. A striped tail, banded alternately in blue and yellow, curls outward from its hindquarters and terminates in a distinctive yellow orb that emits a faint glow. Two small, pale yellow horns sit atop its head, and its face is a gentle, wide-eyed oval. The fleece itself is not merely decorative: it serves as a living battery, capable of storing and conducting considerable quantities of static electricity, and when that charge grows intense, the wool can swell to nearly double its ordinary volume, visibly transforming Mareep's already plump shape into something far more spherical.

Mareep is most reliably found in open grasslands and broad meadows, making its home in the kinds of wide, sun-warmed fields that also suit domestic sheep herding. In the Johto region it has historically been encountered across agricultural plains and rolling hillsides, while populations have also been documented in comparable grassy corridors in Sinnoh and Kalos. It tends to prefer areas where the air is relatively dry, since low humidity allows static to accumulate in its wool more efficiently. Mareep is generally a social creature, and small groups of them can often be spotted grazing together in the late morning hours when sunlight warms the open ground. Population density varies considerably from route to route, but wherever it appears, Mareep tends to cluster near others of its kind, and a whole flock moving together can produce a faint collective crackling sound that experienced trainers learn to recognise from some distance away.

In terms of daily behaviour, Mareep lives a largely peaceful, herbivorous existence. It grazes on grasses and low-growing plants throughout the day, generating static electricity simply through the repeated friction of movement: each step and each brush of its wool against surrounding vegetation contributes to the steadily growing charge inside its body. The orb at the tip of its tail brightens perceptibly as the charge intensifies, serving as a useful visual indicator of how much electricity the Pokémon is currently holding. Mareep is temperamentally docile and shows little aggression toward humans or most other Pokémon under ordinary circumstances. However, any creature that touches Mareep when it is fully charged risks a sharp and uncomfortable shock. Field researchers note that herds sometimes huddle together during rainstorms, as though instinctively aware that the moisture will dissipate their stored charge more quickly than they prefer.

In battle, Mareep is a specially oriented combatant rather than a physical one, with its most reliable offensive output coming through Electric-type special moves. Its Static ability is its most practically useful trait in a fight: when an opposing Pokémon makes physical contact with Mareep, there is a meaningful chance that the attacker will be left paralysed, dramatically reducing its speed and making it less reliable in subsequent turns. This effect causes careless physical attackers to pay a real price for engaging Mareep directly. Its hidden ability, Plus, increases Mareep's own Special Attack significantly when paired with a partner that carries either Plus or Minus, making it a genuine option for double battles within those specific team compositions. As a pure Electric type, Mareep carries only one elemental weakness: Ground-type moves bypass its natural resistances entirely. It resists Electric, Flying, and Steel, which provides some defensive utility, though its modest bulk means it cannot absorb hits indefinitely. Its speed is notably low, so it typically acts after faster opponents.

Mareep sits at the beginning of a three-stage evolutionary line that represents one of the stronger Electric-type progressions available to trainers beginning their journey through Johto. It evolves into Flaaffy upon reaching a sufficient level of experience, shedding much of its wool in exchange for a more upright posture and improved durability. Flaaffy then evolves further into Ampharos, a tall and luminous Pokémon with exceptional Special Attack power and considerable staying power in battle. Ampharos also gained a Mega Evolution in the sixth generation of games, further cementing the long-term value of the entire line. Mareep itself carries significance beyond its evolutionary potential: for many trainers it was the first and only Electric-type option available in the early portions of the Johto games, filling a role comparable to what Pikachu had done in Kanto. Researchers interested in bioelectricity have long studied Mareep's fleece for insights into natural charge storage, and the Pokémon remains a subject of genuine curiosity both in the field and in academic circles focused on Electric-type physiology.
