Murkrow is the Darkness Pokémon, a dual Dark and Flying type introduced in the second generation of games set in the Johto region. It takes the form of a small bird closely resembling a crow or raven, cloaked almost entirely in jet-black plumage. Its most striking feature is the distinctive crest atop its head, which fans outward and curves upward in a shape that unmistakably evokes the wide brim and pointed peak of a witch's hat, a silhouette that has made it one of the more iconic designs among early Dark-type Pokémon. Its tail feathers splay outward in three short, rounded points, and two piercing red eyes gleam from its otherwise dark face, giving it a watchful and somewhat unsettling expression. Murkrow stands small enough that a person could hold one comfortably in both hands, its body compact and its wings folded neatly against its sides when at rest.
Murkrow inhabits dense forests and wooded areas, where the deep shadow of the canopy suits its strongly nocturnal nature. It has been encountered across several regions, appearing with particular frequency in areas associated with Johto and later Sinnoh, typically wherever old-growth trees provide shelter and cover through the day. It is not commonly seen in open grasslands or bright coastal areas, preferring the enclosed dark of woodland interiors. While Murkrow is capable of solitary living, it is often found moving in loose groupings at night, and larger gatherings have been reported along forest edges just after dusk. This species does not appear to migrate in any studied seasonal pattern but is highly sensitive to light levels, retreating into dense cover the moment dawn approaches and becoming active again as darkness falls.
Murkrow is a famously nocturnal and mischievous Pokémon. It feeds on seeds, small insects, and whatever else it can scavenge in the dark, and it has a well-documented attraction to glittering objects, which it will collect and cache in hidden spots throughout its territory. Field researchers and trainers alike report that Murkrow has a habit of leading travelers off mountain paths or deep into unfamiliar forest at night, a behavior whose exact motivation remains debated — some attribute it to territorial instinct, others to simple curiosity or an apparent playful streak. The Pokédex entry recorded across multiple regions describes it as feared and loathed, believed to bring misfortune to anyone who encounters it after dark. This reputation has persisted through generations and appears in folklore across multiple cultures within the Pokémon world. Despite this ominous standing, Murkrow raised in captivity from an early age can become surprisingly loyal to a trainer, though it tends to retain a sly and independent temperament.
In battle, Murkrow can call upon one of two standard abilities or a hidden one. Its first ability, Insomnia, makes it completely immune to sleep-inducing moves, ensuring opponents cannot put it to sleep to waste its turns or set up freely against it. Its second ability, Super Luck, raises the critical hit rate of every move it uses by one full stage, which pairs particularly well with moves that already carry an elevated critical hit chance and can result in a surprising frequency of extra-damage strikes. Its hidden ability, Prankster, grants increased priority to all status-category moves it uses, allowing it to execute moves like Thunder Wave or Haze before the opponent can act regardless of speed. Murkrow has a respectable speed that lets it outpace a wide range of opponents, and its attack and special attack are evenly matched, giving trainers flexibility in how they build around it. Its significant weakness lies in its very low physical and special bulk, making it fragile against the many types that threaten it, including Fighting, Rock, Electric, Ice, Bug, and Fairy. It functions best as a fast disruptor rather than a straightforward attacker.
Murkrow has no pre-evolved form and evolves into Honchkrow through exposure to a Dusk Stone, an item that also triggers evolution in several other Pokémon associated with darkness and twilight. This evolution transforms it from a small, scheming bird into a large and commanding figure, dramatically improving its bulk and overall power. Murkrow itself occupies an interesting historical position as one of the first Pokémon specifically designated as a Dark type, helping to define what that typing meant aesthetically and thematically when it debuted alongside the very concept of the Dark type in Generation Two. Researchers interested in avian Pokémon behavior find it a valuable subject, and its documented tendency to collect shiny objects has contributed to broader studies of tool-adjacent behavior in bird-type species. For trainers, it represents an accessible early Dark and Flying type with a ceiling that, once unlocked through the Dusk Stone, rises considerably.
