ENTRY

Natu is the Tiny Bird Pokémon, a Psychic and Flying type introduced in the second generation of Pokémon. Despite the Flying designation, this diminutive creature cannot yet take to the air under its own power. It stands roughly the height of a newborn's forearm and has a round, compact body covered in bright green feathers with red and yellow markings along its sides. Its most striking feature is a pair of enormous, unblinking eyes that seem to occupy a disproportionate share of its face. Its wings are present but underdeveloped, no more than small nubs pressed close to its body, and its stubby beak and tiny feet complete a silhouette that, at first glance, resembles a vivid green puffball more than a bird.

Natu inhabits forested environments, particularly in the Johto region, where it can be found among dense undergrowth, rocky clearings, and along the edges of the Safari Zone. It favors areas with tall trees and thick canopy cover, which provide both shelter and perches from which it can observe its surroundings. Population density tends to be moderate; Natu is neither rare nor especially common, and small groups of two or three individuals may share a territory without conflict. It does not appear to migrate seasonally, preferring to remain in familiar terrain year-round. Field researchers note that Natu is most active during daylight hours, spending much of the day stationary and alert.

Because its wings are not yet developed enough for flight, Natu moves by hopping along the ground and between low branches with surprising agility. It feeds primarily on cactus shoots, berries, and other plant matter found at or near ground level. The species is famous for its intense, forward-fixed gaze; Natu will lock onto a target and stare without wavering for extended periods, and trainers who approach one in the wild often find themselves subject to this unsettling scrutiny. Despite appearances, Natu is not aggressive, and its staring behavior is thought to be tied to its psychic sensitivity rather than any territorial impulse. Field lore suggests that Natu uses its large eyes to process subtle environmental cues invisible to ordinary sight, and some researchers believe it may be perceiving events slightly ahead in time.

Natu can carry one of three abilities that shape its role in battle. Synchronize causes any burn, paralysis, or poisoning inflicted upon Natu to immediately spread back to the Pokémon that caused it, making opponents think twice before using status moves. Early Bird causes Natu to recover from sleep in roughly half the time it would normally take, reducing the downtime that sleep-inducing moves can impose. Its hidden ability, Magic Bounce, is the most powerful of the three, reflecting almost any non-damaging move such as entry hazards, status conditions, or stat-lowering attacks straight back at the user before it can take effect. As a Psychic and Flying type, Natu resists Fighting and Grass type moves, but it carries genuine vulnerabilities to Bug, Ghost, Dark, Rock, Electric, and Ice type attacks. Its special attack and speed are its strongest qualities, making it more comfortable launching ranged psychic attacks than trading physical blows, though its overall defensive profile is fragile, limiting how long it can hold its ground.

Natu belongs to a two-stage evolutionary line. It evolves into Xatu once it gains enough experience, typically around the midpoint of a trainer's journey, and Xatu retains the same Psychic and Flying typing while growing into a dramatically larger, more powerful, and more ornately patterned bird. Natu sits at a relatively early position within the second-generation Pokédex, appearing among a cluster of Johto-native species. Researchers and trainers find Natu significant largely because of Magic Bounce, which even in its unevolved form grants it a distinctive niche as a reflector of disruptive field effects. Its persistent, unblinking stare has also made it a subject of considerable interest among those who study psychic Pokémon, as behaviorists continue to debate whether that fixed gaze is truly a window into precognitive perception or simply a refined adaptation for processing complex visual information.
