ENTRY

Poliwag is a Water-type Pokémon belonging to the first generation of species catalogued by researchers, known formally as the Tadpole Pokémon. It is a small, round creature whose body resembles the aquatic larval stage of an amphibian, covered in smooth, deep blue skin that gives off a faint sheen when wet. Its most striking and immediately recognizable feature is the large, tightly coiled black-and-white spiral pattern that covers its belly. This swirl is not merely decorative, as the skin of Poliwag's abdomen is translucent, and the pattern visible through it is actually a representation of the Pokémon's internal organs and intestinal structure, which have arranged themselves in a distinctive circular configuration over the course of its development. Poliwag stands only as tall as a human's knee, with a plump, spherical torso, a long and flexible tail used primarily for swimming, and two small stubby legs that it has only recently grown. Its eyes are large and round, sitting atop its head and giving it wide-angle vision that serves it well in aquatic environments.

Poliwag makes its home along the water's edge, favoring still or slow-moving bodies of fresh water such as ponds, lakes, and the calmer stretches of rivers. It is widespread across the Kanto region and has been observed in many other temperate areas where suitable freshwater habitats exist. It tends to gather in small, loose groups in the shallows, though it is not aggressively territorial and will often coexist peacefully with other small aquatic species sharing the same water. Poliwag is rarely found far from water and feels exposed and vulnerable on dry land. It shows a preference for areas with soft, muddy bottoms, where it can forage easily and conceal itself from predators by stirring up sediment. Poliwag can be observed feeding at most hours of the day, though it tends to be most active during the warmer parts of the day when water temperature suits its cold-tolerant physiology.

Poliwag is a relatively timid Pokémon that strongly prefers swimming to any activity requiring the use of its legs on solid ground. Its newly developed legs are not yet strong enough to carry it efficiently, making movement on land awkward and slow, and so Poliwag retreats to water whenever possible. It feeds primarily on small aquatic organisms such as tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, and microscopic plant material filtered from the water column. When threatened by a predator, Poliwag is known to use its conspicuous belly swirl as a form of distraction, as the spinning visual pattern can disorient an attacker long enough for the Pokémon to escape into deeper water. Field researchers note that Poliwag is generally docile and curious around humans, and young individuals sometimes approach trainers who remain still near the water's edge, though they will retreat immediately at any sudden movement.

In battle, Poliwag can draw on one of three abilities: Water Absorb, Damp, and the hidden ability Swift Swim. Water Absorb is a passive defensive trait that allows Poliwag to recover a portion of its health whenever it is struck by a Water-type move, effectively neutralizing an entire category of attacks that would otherwise deal damage. Damp suppresses any moves that rely on explosive force, preventing opponents from using techniques such as Self-Destruct or Explosion while Poliwag remains on the field. Swift Swim is a situationally powerful ability that doubles Poliwag's movement speed during rain, transforming this small Pokémon into a surprisingly fast combatant under the right weather conditions. As a pure Water type, Poliwag is vulnerable to Grass-type and Electric-type attacks but resists Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel moves. Its most notable quality in battle is its speed, which is considerably higher than that of many Pokémon at this stage of development, while its offensive and defensive capabilities remain modest and evenly balanced across the board.

Poliwag sits at the base of one of the first generation's more branching evolutionary lines. It evolves into Poliwhirl upon reaching level twenty-five, gaining greater physical strength and more pronounced aquatic adaptations in the process. From there, Poliwhirl can evolve in one of two directions: exposure to a Water Stone transforms it into Poliwrath, a powerful Water- and Fighting-type, while trading Poliwhirl while it holds a King's Rock causes it to evolve instead into Politoed, a Water-type with a distinctly different temperament and competitive role. Researchers find Poliwag particularly interesting as a subject of study because its transparent abdomen offers a rare opportunity to observe certain physiological processes without invasive examination, making it valuable beyond the context of training and battle. Trainers value it as an accessible early Water-type with a well-defined developmental path and meaningful choices at the final stage of evolution, cementing its place as a familiar and enduring species throughout the Kanto region and well beyond its borders.
