ENTRY

Rhydon is the Drill Pokémon, a Ground and Rock type first encountered in the original generation. It stands roughly as tall as an adult human but considerably more massive, supported on two thick, pillar-like legs. Its body is encased in a layered, armor-like gray hide that resembles overlapping rock plates, giving it a prehistoric, reptilian silhouette. The defining feature is the long, spiraling horn that projects from the center of its face, tapered to a drill-like point. A shorter spike rises from the crown of its broad, heavily ridged head. Its tail is thick and powerful, and its forelimbs, though shorter than its legs, carry substantial muscular mass. This combination of gray plating, squat bipedal build, and prominent drill horn makes Rhydon immediately distinguishable among large terrestrial Pokémon.

Rhydon inhabits rough, rocky terrain across several regions, favoring mountainous zones, volcanic foothills, and arid canyon landscapes. It is most often found among exposed rock faces, boulder fields, and dry, mineral-rich ground. Its celebrated heat resistance documented as capable of enduring contact with material at extreme volcanic temperatures makes lava-adjacent terrain a particularly natural home. Rhydon is solitary by nature, establishing wide territorial ranges to support its considerable appetite. Population density across any given area is low, as individuals do not readily share ground with one another. It is primarily diurnal, moving through its territory at a slow, deliberate pace during daylight hours and retreating to shallow caves or rocky overhangs to rest at night.

Rhydon is broadly herbivorous, using its horn to bore through rocky soil and uproot dense, mineral-laden vegetation. It also drills directly into boulders to access mineral deposits, supplementing its diet with trace elements unavailable in plant matter alone. Slow to arouse but intensely reactive once provoked, an agitated Rhydon will charge with tremendous force, using its horn as a battering ram against anything it perceives as a threat. Communication between individuals takes the form of low, resonant vocalizations that carry well across open rocky terrain. During mating season, rivals engage in horn-locking contests that test the durability of both horn and hide. Rhydon raised alongside humans from a young age tend to develop a calm, steadfast disposition, and experienced trainers frequently describe them as stoic and deeply loyal companions.

In battle, Rhydon is a powerful physical attacker with exceptional bulk. Its Lightning Rod ability draws in opposing Electric moves, absorbing the charge to sharpen its own special attack a particularly useful trait in double battles, where it can shield partners from electrical attacks entirely. Its Rock Head ability eliminates the recoil cost of moves like Double-Edge, allowing Rhydon to strike with full force without gradually wearing itself down. Certain individuals carry the hidden Reckless ability instead, which amplifies the power of recoil moves at the cost of that same protection a riskier but potentially more explosive approach. Offensively, its Ground and Rock typing grants strong coverage against Fire, Electric, Flying, and Poison types, among others. Defensively, it is vulnerable to Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Ground, and Steel attacks, and its modest special defense makes specially placed hits in those categories particularly dangerous. Its low speed means it functions best as a heavy-hitting anchor rather than an aggressive frontrunner.

Rhydon sits at the center of a three-stage evolutionary line. It evolves from Rhyhorn, a smaller quadrupedal Rock and Ground type, as that Pokémon reaches a threshold of maturity. Rhydon can in turn evolve into Rhyperior, a massive final form with boulders embedded in its hide, but this transformation requires it to hold a specific item called the Protector while being traded between trainers. Beyond its place in the evolutionary line, Rhydon holds a particular distinction within the broader history of Pokémon: it is widely recognized as the first Pokémon ever given a concrete design during the earliest stages of development, predating even the starter Pokémon in the internal creation sequence. This historical standing, combined with its formidable physical presence and broad ecological range, ensures that both trainers and researchers continue to regard Rhydon as one of the most significant Pokémon in the entire Pokédex.
