Snorlax is the Sleeping Pokémon, a Normal-type species that first appeared in the original generation of Pokémon. It is an enormous, bear-like creature with a distinctly humanoid silhouette — it stands upright on two short, stubby legs and has rounded arms that rest at its sides. Its body is dominated by a vast, rounded belly covered in creamy beige fur, while the rest of its coat is a deep blue-black. Its face is characterized by tiny, half-lidded eyes, a wide mouth, and small pointed ears. Snorlax is significantly larger and heavier than an adult human, dwarfing most people in both height and girth. Its most defining feature is its extraordinary mass, which it seems to carry with complete indifference, as if gravity itself is merely a minor inconvenience.
Snorlax is found primarily in mountainous regions and their surrounding foothills, though it is also encountered along major travel routes where it frequently blocks roads and pathways entirely. It has been observed across many regions, from Kanto to Johto and beyond, typically in temperate to cool climates where food sources are abundant. Snorlax is an exceptionally solitary creature, and encountering two in close proximity is rare enough to be genuinely noteworthy. It shows no strong preference for specific terrain beyond proximity to food, and individuals have been found sleeping in meadows, forests, riversides, and even on rooftops. Overall population density is low, which makes each sighting a significant event for travelers who need to pass through the routes it occupies.
Snorlax spends the vast majority of its life asleep. When it is not sleeping, it is eating, and when it is not eating, it is almost certainly sleeping again. Its appetite is legendary — it consumes enormous quantities of food each day to sustain its bulk, and it is capable of eating almost anything, including food that would be toxic to most other Pokémon, without any apparent ill effect. Despite its immense size, Snorlax is generally peaceful and good-natured toward humans, though its sheer mass makes it an unintentional hazard to anything unfortunate enough to be nearby when it rolls over. It can only be woken by very specific stimuli, most famously the melody of a Poké Flute. Trainers and researchers in the field note consistently that Snorlax seems genuinely content in its endless cycle of eating and sleeping, showing little interest in conflict unless directly provoked.
Snorlax is a formidable defensive and physical presence on the battlefield. Its standard ability, Immunity, renders it completely impervious to poisoning, a significant advantage given how common poison-based strategies are in competitive play. Its other standard ability, Thick Fat, insulates it against fire-type and ice-type attacks by halving the damage it receives from both, which meaningfully shores up two common offensive types that would otherwise threaten it. Its hidden ability, Gluttony, allows it to consume a held berry for recovery or stat benefits earlier than usual, triggering when its health drops below half rather than the conventional quarter threshold — a useful trait given how frequently it absorbs hits before being seriously threatened. As a Normal-type, Snorlax is untouchable by Ghost-type moves and carries only a single weakness to Fighting-type attacks. Its enormous physical endurance and strong special defense make it a reliable wall that can absorb hits from both physical and special attackers, while its solid attack stat means it strikes back with meaningful force. Its very low speed is its most significant tactical liability, as it almost always moves last in any given turn.
Snorlax evolves from Munchlax, a small Normal-type introduced in a later generation that shares the same love of food and sleep in a more compact and energetic form. Munchlax evolves into Snorlax through friendship, reflecting the bond it gradually builds with the people who care for it over time. Snorlax itself does not evolve further and represents the final stage of its evolutionary line. Within the broader Pokédex, it occupies a position as one of the most recognized Pokémon of the original generation, known worldwide for its unmistakable silhouette and its memorable role blocking major routes that trainers must clear in order to progress on their journeys. Researchers are particularly interested in Snorlax for its extraordinary metabolic efficiency, its near-total dietary immunity to toxins, and the still-unexplained mechanism by which it sustains robust health despite one of the most sedentary lifestyles of any known Pokémon species.
