ENTRY

Stantler is the Big Horn Pokémon, a pure Normal-type species that made its debut in the second generation of games. It is a large, deer-like quadruped covered in warm brown fur with a pale cream underside, standing roughly at the shoulder height of an adult human and built with a broad, sturdy frame suited to forest life. Its most immediately striking features are its tall, sweeping antlers, which curve dramatically outward and upward before tapering to blunt tips. Near the base of each antler sits a smooth, rounded orb, and it is these orbs that define Stantler above all else: they are capable of subtly altering the flow of air around them, generating a strange distortion of the space nearby that can disorient anything watching. Stantler also bears a rounded, distinctly red nose, giving it a silhouette that many find memorable among forest-dwelling Pokémon.

Stantler makes its home in temperate forests, and it is most reliably encountered in the Johto region, where it inhabits wooded routes passing through stands of broad-leaved trees. It gravitates toward areas with dense canopy cover and nearby water sources, preferring the quieter, less-trafficked sections of forest where human activity is minimal. Its population density is relatively low compared to many common forest species, making a sighting something that trainers in the region remember. Stantler is generally found alone or in small, loose herds rather than large groups, and it is more active during the daylight hours, retreating deeper into the trees as evening falls. Historical records from the ancient Hisui region suggest that Stantler once also roamed more open grassland terrain, pointing to a degree of adaptability in its habitat preferences.

Stantler is a dedicated herbivore, spending the bulk of its waking hours grazing on grasses, shrubs, fallen leaves, and the softer bark of young trees. It is a placid animal by temperament and does not seek confrontation, but it responds with considerable speed and force when it perceives a threat to itself or nearby members of its herd. Its primary defense lies in its antler orbs: when Stantler shakes or turns its head, the orbs generate a disorienting visual and spatial effect that causes pursuing predators to lose their sense of direction, sometimes becoming so confused that they wander off entirely the wrong way. Field researchers have noted that prolonged eye contact with a Stantler at close range can induce mild disorientation even in humans. Among its own kind it communicates through subtle body posture and low, rumbling vocalizations that carry well through dense woodland.

In battle, Stantler brings a choice between three distinct abilities. Intimidate works the moment Stantler sets foot on the field, its imposing posture and bearing causing opponents to flinch and lose some of their physical striking power before the first move is even made. Frisk operates differently, giving Stantler a passive awareness of any item an opponent is holding as soon as it enters the fight, providing its trainer immediate intelligence about what tools the opposing side has in play. The hidden ability Sap Sipper converts any grass-type move aimed at Stantler into fuel rather than damage, each such attempt landing a boost to Stantler's own physical attack rather than any harm. As a pure Normal type, Stantler cannot be touched by Ghost-type moves at all, though Fighting-type attacks represent its one clear weakness. Its attack stat leans physical and is its strongest asset, though its special attack is close enough behind that it can threaten from either angle, and a solid turn of speed means it frequently acts before mid-range opponents.

In most of the main series games, Stantler stands as a terminal species with no evolution, occupying its place in the Pokédex as a self-contained entry. In the ancient Hisui region, however, a path forward exists: a Stantler that masters the use of Psyshield Bash in its most agile form, executing that technique successfully twenty times in battle, awakens a deeper potential within itself and evolves into Wyrdeer, a larger and more imposing Normal and Psychic type. This evolutionary discovery has prompted considerable interest among researchers, who note that the reality-warping properties of Stantler's antler orbs hint at psychic potential lying dormant beneath an otherwise unremarkable Normal typing. For trainers, Stantler is prized as a reliable forest companion with flexible ability choices, and for those working in Hisui or with access to its traditions, it serves as the foundation for one of that region's most distinctive and storied evolved forms.
