Yanma is the Clear Wing Pokémon, a Bug and Flying type first introduced in the second generation of games. Its design draws unmistakably from dragonflies, particularly the enormous prehistoric species that dominated ancient skies long before most modern life forms existed. Yanma has a slender, elongated red body that tapers toward the tail, which terminates in a small heart-shaped structure. Two pairs of large, transparent wings with a faint green tint extend from its thorax, spanning wide relative to its compact frame. Most striking are its enormous compound eyes, which occupy the majority of its head and grant it a nearly panoramic field of vision in all directions. Yanma stands roughly knee-height to an adult human, making it a small but aerodynamically formidable creature that is easy to underestimate at first glance.
Yanma is primarily a forest-dwelling Pokémon, favoring dense woodland areas where it can dart between trees at high speed. It gravitates toward warm to temperate climates and shows a particular preference for habitats near ponds, streams, or other freshwater sources, an instinct that mirrors the behavior of real-world dragonflies. Within forests, Yanma occupies the mid-canopy layer, hovering and patrolling defined territories with rapid, precise movements that leave most observers struggling to follow its path. It is a relatively uncommon sight even within suitable habitats, and confirmed populations tend to cluster in protected natural areas where human development has not disrupted the woodland ecosystem. Yanma is generally solitary outside of mating season, though small groups may gather near standing water when conditions are right. It is most active during daylight hours, and its transparent wings catch sunlight at certain angles in ways that make it appear to momentarily vanish and reappear in midair.
Yanma is a predatory insectivore, pursuing smaller flying insects with precise aerial maneuvers at remarkable velocity. Its enormous compound eyes provide exceptional motion detection, allowing it to track fast-moving prey and react before most surrounding creatures can register any movement at all. Despite its predatory nature, Yanma is not inherently aggressive toward humans and tends to maintain a cautious distance unless it feels threatened or cornered. Field researchers note that it can be a curious Pokémon, sometimes hovering at the edge of a campsite or trail to observe activity before darting away. The wing beats Yanma generates are not merely a means of locomotion — when it accelerates sharply, the resulting pressure changes can produce shockwaves powerful enough to shatter glass in nearby structures, a phenomenon that makes Yanma an unwelcome neighbor to any settlement built within a forest. Trainers who spend extended time with Yanma consistently report that the species grows noticeably more comfortable around familiar individuals over time.
In battle, Yanma can operate under one of three distinct ability configurations. Speed Boost is its most sought-after standard ability, automatically increasing its already considerable speed at the end of every turn it remains active in a fight — meaning that the longer a match continues, the faster Yanma becomes, rewarding strategies that keep it on the field through early pressure. Compound Eyes is its alternative standard ability, sharpening the accuracy of every move it uses by a significant margin and making otherwise unreliable techniques far more consistent and trustworthy. Its hidden ability, Frisk, allows it to detect and identify any held item an opposing Pokémon is carrying the moment Yanma enters the battlefield, providing valuable information that can shape a trainer's tactical decisions. As a Bug and Flying type, Yanma carries meaningful vulnerabilities to Rock, Fire, Electric, Ice, and Flying moves, giving opposing trainers several viable angles of attack to exploit. Its offensive profile leans toward special attacks, and its high speed lets it act before the vast majority of opponents. Its defenses are thin on both sides of the spectrum, however, making it far better suited to a fast hit-and-run role than to prolonged exchanges.
Yanma occupies the first stage of a two-member evolutionary line and does not evolve from any earlier form. When a Yanma levels up while it knows the move AncientPower, it transforms into Yanmega, a substantially larger and more powerful dragonfly Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. This evolution condition, tied to the presence of a specific move rather than a simple level threshold, reflects the prehistoric inspiration at the heart of both species' designs — Yanma and Yanmega are both modeled after Meganeura, ancient dragonfly relatives that lived hundreds of millions of years ago and represent some of the largest flying insects ever documented in the fossil record. Researchers value Yanma as a subject of study precisely because of this prehistoric connection, as its compound eye structure and wing physiology offer meaningful insight into how ancient aerial insect mechanics may have functioned. For trainers, Yanma represents a patient investment — a fragile but fleet Pokémon that rewards careful play and grows into one of the more capable Bug-type special attackers in the wider roster.
