Clefable is a Fairy-type Pokémon that traces its origins to the first generation of Pokémon discovered in the Kanto region. Classified as the Fairy Pokémon, it carries a designation that reflects its ethereal presence and deep connection to moonlight and mystical energy. Clefable stands roughly the height of a young child, with a round, plump body covered in soft pale pink fur. Its face is broad and gentle, framed by small pointed ears tipped with brown, and a single curled lock of fur sits at the crown of its head. Small, wing-like appendages fold against its back and, while they do not permit true flight, they lend Clefable a light, gliding quality in movement that makes it seem almost weightless. Its long tail arcs upward and ends in a distinctive star-shaped curl. Everything about its appearance communicates softness and calm, yet underneath that gentleness lies a Pokémon of considerable resilience.
Clefable is a mountain-dwelling species, most consistently encountered at high elevations where nights are clear and the full moon fills the sky without obstruction. Mount Moon in the Kanto region has long been the location most closely associated with the species, and it remains one of the few places where researchers have been able to observe Clefable behavior with any regularity. The species also inhabits mountainous highland zones in Johto and has been recorded in select elevated terrain across other regions, though its overall range is limited and sightings away from core habitats are uncommon. Clefable possesses extraordinarily sensitive hearing and uses it to detect humans from a considerable distance, retreating long before any encounter can develop. It is largely solitary and keeps a low population density across its territory. Activity spikes on full-moon nights, a pattern researchers attribute to its Fairy nature and its apparent attunement to lunar energy.
Clefable is, by temperament, one of the most timid Pokémon documented. The instant it perceives a person nearby, it turns and flees, moving with a near-silent, gliding gait that seems to leave the ground almost untouched. In the wild, it forages among mountain meadows and beside high-altitude springs, gravitating toward places of natural stillness. It communicates with its own kind through soft, subtle sounds and shows no territorial aggression toward other species. Communities living near Mount Moon have built up a body of folklore around the species, describing Clefable as a moonlit wanderer that brings good fortune to those few who catch a glimpse of it without causing a disturbance. Clefable that are raised carefully from their earliest stage shed much of their wildness and become calm, attentive companions, hinting at an inner warmth that patient trainers learn to bring out.
Clefable carries two standard abilities and one hidden one. Cute Charm causes Pokémon that strike it with a physical move to sometimes become infatuated, an effect that can lead the afflicted opponent to withhold its own attacks unpredictably. Magic Guard is the ability that defines Clefable's standing among competitive trainers: it prevents all sources of indirect damage from affecting Clefable's health, meaning poison, burn, weather damage, and similar effects simply do not apply, granting it a durability that much larger Pokémon often cannot match. The hidden ability, Unaware, causes Clefable to ignore all stat boosts an opponent has accumulated, making it highly effective at neutralizing setup-heavy rivals. As a Fairy type, it resists Bug, Dark, and Fighting, and is completely immune to Dragon-type attacks, while its main vulnerabilities run against Poison and Steel. In battle, Clefable favors special offense, carries solid bulk, and can learn an unusually wide range of moves across many types, making it a difficult and adaptable opponent to plan against.
Clefable is the final stage of a three-part evolutionary line. It evolves from Clefairy by means of a Moon Stone, one of the oldest known evolutionary items and one found with greatest frequency in the mountain regions this line calls home. Clefairy itself evolves from Cleffa, the smallest form of the line, through the affection and care a trainer invests in the young Pokémon. Because the Moon Stone pathway requires a specific item rather than simple battling and experience, reaching Clefable demands a deliberate effort. Researchers have maintained a long-standing interest in Clefable not only for its passive resilience through Magic Guard but for the extraordinary breadth of its move-learning capacity, which spans elemental, status, and coverage techniques across more type categories than almost any comparable Pokémon. That combination of durability and unpredictable range has made Clefable a fixture in serious competitive study and a Pokémon that trainers across every generation since Kanto have continued to rely on.
