Cleffa is a Fairy-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation and classified as the Star Shape Pokémon. It is one of the smallest members of its evolutionary family, with a diminutive rounded body that barely reaches the knee of an average adult human. Its skin is a soft, warm pink, and its overall silhouette forms a rough five-pointed star shape when viewed straight on, an unusual outline that distinguishes it from nearly every other known species. Small, pointed ears sit atop its round head, and its stubby arms and legs lend it a plump, almost spherical quality. A curled, wispy tail extends from behind, and a faint star-shaped marking appears on the side of its face just below one ear. Two small dark eyes give it an innocent, gentle expression that many find immediately endearing.
Cleffa inhabits high mountain environments, favoring remote, rocky terrain where human activity is scarce. It has been documented across several regions wherever suitable elevation and quiet wilderness exist. The species shows a clear preference for open-sky locations, and sightings are notably more frequent in areas where meteorites or shooting stars have been observed passing overhead. Cleffa does not gather in large colonies, but small groups have been found sheltering together in rocky outcroppings or tucked into the hollows of mountain terrain. Field researchers note that the species is rarely visible during daylight hours and becomes most active on clear nights, particularly when meteor showers illuminate the sky above its habitat.
Cleffa is gentle and docile, with little inclination toward aggression or confrontation. When it encounters an unfamiliar presence, it will typically retreat or conceal itself rather than stand its ground. On calm, star-filled nights, especially when meteors streak overhead, groups of Cleffa have been observed moving in slow, swaying patterns that many witnesses describe as a kind of communal dance. Their cries are soft and melodic, and an old piece of folklore holds that hearing Cleffa sing beneath a meteor shower brings good fortune to those present. Their diet in the wild is not extensively documented, though they appear to forage for small berries and edible vegetation found at high altitudes. Trainers who have raised Cleffa consistently report that the species bonds readily with patient and affectionate caregivers.
In battle, Cleffa may draw on two primary abilities and one rarer hidden ability. Its Cute Charm ability means that any Pokémon making direct physical contact with Cleffa risks becoming infatuated, a condition that can prevent the affected opponent from acting freely each turn. Its alternate primary ability, Magic Guard, is considerably more versatile, shielding Cleffa from all indirect sources of damage so that weather conditions, hazards placed on the field, and passive status ailments cannot gradually wear it down. The hidden ability Friend Guard takes a different approach altogether, extending its benefit to allies by reducing the direct damage that any friendly Pokémon on the team receives. As a Fairy type, Cleffa is resistant to Dragon, Fighting, Bug, and Dark-type attacks, but Poison and Steel-type moves exploit a meaningful weakness. Its physical attack and speed are both very low, meaning it rarely moves first and lacks direct offensive power, but its special defense is noticeably sturdier than its other combat statistics, giving it some staying power against opponents who favor special attacks.
Cleffa is the first stage in a three-part evolutionary line that ends in one of the most recognized Pokémon ever recorded. It evolves into Clefairy once it has developed a strong enough bond with its trainer, a state commonly described as high friendship or happiness. Clefairy then evolves further into Clefable through exposure to a Moon Stone, a mineral associated with lunar energy. As a baby Pokémon, Cleffa cannot produce eggs of its own, and obtaining one requires breeding from later members of its evolutionary family. Its distinctive star-shaped silhouette and the enduring popular belief that it arrived on a meteorite have made it a subject of genuine scientific interest, with researchers investigating whether its body shape and Fairy-type energy carry any traceable connection to extraterrestrial origins. For trainers and researchers alike, Cleffa represents the earliest and most unguarded expression of a lineage that has held a place of deep affection in the Pokémon world since the very beginning.
