Igglybuff is the Balloon Pokémon, a Baby-class species of Normal and Fairy typing that made its debut in the second generation. It is among the smallest members of its evolutionary family, presenting as a compact, nearly spherical figure roughly the size of a large melon, small enough to rest easily in a trainer's arms. Its body is a uniformly warm pink, a shade slightly deeper than the pale blush of its evolved form, and its round silhouette is defined almost entirely by the generous curve of its inflated body. Stubby arms extend from its sides, barely reaching forward, and its tiny feet are similarly minimal. A short curl of lighter hair sits atop its head, and its wide eyes carry an expression of gentle, perpetual curiosity. Most distinctive is the quality of its skin, which is extraordinarily soft and pliable, often described as softer than that of any other known Pokémon, lending the whole creature the yielding resilience of a rubber ball.
Igglybuff is found primarily in open grassland habitats, favoring rolling meadows and areas of low vegetation that suit its natural bouncing movement. It gravitates toward temperate climates with mild conditions and ground soft enough to cushion the repeated impact of its rolling. Wild populations are generally sparse and not easy to find; Igglybuff tends to settle in concealed hollows within tall grass, resting undisturbed by the movement of larger Pokémon. It is not entirely solitary, and small clusters of two or three individuals are occasionally observed together, apparently drawing comfort from each other's presence. Activity peaks during daylight hours, when it can sometimes be spotted tumbling across open meadow. Steep or rocky terrain is generally avoided, as such surfaces make the results of uncontrolled rolling difficult to predict.
Igglybuff is a gentle and curious creature that approaches both humans and other Pokémon with an artless openness that can occasionally lead it into accidental trouble. When startled or overexcited, it may begin to roll, and once rolling its smooth skin provides so little friction that it cannot stop until it strikes an obstacle or the ground flattens beneath it. This is not distress but simply a consequence of its body's shape and texture. Igglybuff also emits a faint, sweet fragrance that reportedly has a mild calming effect on nearby Pokémon. It is drawn to singing and vocalizes often, though its voice at this early stage remains soft and lacks the sleep-inducing power its evolved form is famous for. Its diet consists of soft berries and low-growing plant matter, consumed in small portions throughout the day. Trainers who raise Igglybuff consistently describe it as affectionate and responsive to gentle attention.
In battle, Igglybuff is not well suited for sustained front-line combat. Its defensive profile is thin and its speed is low, leaving it reliant on its comparatively generous health reserves and team support to stay in play. Its primary ability, Cute Charm, gives it a chance to infatuate any opponent that makes direct physical contact, which can disrupt an attacker across multiple turns. The secondary ability, Competitive, is more conditionally powerful: any time an opponent lowers one of Igglybuff's stats, its Special Attack rises sharply in response, turning debuff-reliant strategies against their user. The hidden ability, Friend Guard, applies only in multi-battle formats, where it reduces damage dealt to allied Pokémon on the field. As a Normal and Fairy type, Igglybuff is entirely unaffected by Ghost-type and Dragon-type moves, a useful passive edge in certain matchups. Against it, Fighting, Poison, and Steel-type moves all carry heightened power, and its low defensive stats mean those matchups demand particular care from its trainer.
Igglybuff sits at the base of a three-stage evolutionary line, preceding Jigglypuff and the final form, Wigglytuff. It evolves into Jigglypuff not through a level requirement or an item, but through the cultivation of a deep bond of friendship with its trainer. As a Baby Pokémon, it cannot be obtained from a standard breeding pair without preparation; a Jigglypuff or Wigglytuff must hold a specific item known as the Odd Incense at the day care in order for the resulting egg to contain an Igglybuff rather than a Jigglypuff. This places it among a group of second-generation Baby Pokémon retroactively inserted as the earliest forms of species originally known from the first generation. For researchers, Igglybuff holds particular interest for two reasons: the unusual biological properties of its skin and what its early, tentative vocalizations reveal about the developmental origins of the powerful singing ability that defines its entire evolutionary family.
