ENTRY

Dratini is classified as the Dragon Pokémon, a pure Dragon-type species that made its debut in the first generation of Pokémon. Its body is long and serpentine, resembling a pale blue sea serpent with a smooth, almost luminescent hide that shimmers faintly in underwater light. A small white horn protrudes from its forehead, and a rounded white crest adorns its face just below that horn, giving it a dignified and somewhat regal appearance. The eyes are wide and calm, lending Dratini an expression that reads as gentle rather than threatening. In terms of size, Dratini is relatively modest compared to a human, typically stretching just under two meters in length, though its slender and flexible body can coil and move with surprising grace. Despite that modest build, there is an unmistakable sense of latent power in its form, a quiet dignity that hints at what this species is ultimately capable of becoming.

Dratini makes its home at the water's edge, with a particular preference for deep rivers, large lakes, and the calmer stretches of ocean inlets where freshwater meets salt. It is almost entirely aquatic in habit, spending the vast majority of its life submerged, surfacing only briefly and under the cover of darkness. Populations tend to cluster in remote or undisturbed waterways, especially those with cold, clean, deep currents that offer both adequate shelter and reliable prey. For a very long time, Dratini was considered little more than a legend, its existence doubted by much of the scientific community. It was only after a small colony was discovered living at considerable depth in a secluded location that researchers could confirm the species was genuinely real. Sightings remain uncommon even now, and trainers who encounter Dratini in the wild typically do so by fishing in specific deep-water spots or searching the waters along particularly remote routes.

Dratini is largely nocturnal, becoming most active in the hours after dusk when the water is still and fewer threats are present. It feeds primarily on aquatic life, including small fish, crustaceans, and whatever edible plant matter drifts through its habitat. One of the most notable aspects of Dratini's biology is its periodic shedding of skin, a process that appears to be tied to the gradual accumulation of energy within its body rather than simple growth alone. Researchers and trainers who have observed Dratini in the field consistently describe it as shy and cautious around humans, retreating to deeper water when approached rather than holding its ground. It is not an aggressive species by temperament, and among its own kind it generally coexists without conflict, though individuals can become territorial over the most productive feeding areas. Local traditions in many regions have long associated Dratini with rivers and the life those rivers sustain, treating it as a rare and fortunate omen.

In battle, Dratini draws primarily on physical attack, which represents its most developed offensive capability at this stage, while its other attributes sit at a fairly even but overall modest level. Its speed is unremarkable for now, meaning it will often act after opponents in a given exchange. The standard ability, Shed Skin, mirrors the natural biology described above: after each turn of combat, there is a meaningful chance that any major status condition Dratini is carrying, whether paralysis, sleep, poison, burn, or freeze, will clear on its own without any item or move intervention. This makes Dratini considerably more durable than its defensive figures might suggest. The hidden ability, Marvel Scale, works through a different mechanism, actually strengthening Dratini's physical defense whenever it is suffering from a status condition, converting what would normally be a liability into a genuine advantage. As a pure Dragon type, Dratini resists Fire, Water, Grass, and Electric attacks, giving it solid coverage against a wide range of common moves. Its clear vulnerabilities lie against Ice, Dragon, and Fairy attacks, all of which land with intensified force.

Dratini sits at the base of one of the most celebrated evolutionary lines in Pokémon. It evolves into Dragonair upon reaching a high enough level of experience, and Dragonair evolves further into the powerful Dragonite at an even greater level of maturity. The line is remarkable for the dramatic visual transformation it undergoes across each stage, moving from a small aquatic serpent to a sleek and ethereal dragon and finally to a large, orange, vaguely humanoid winged dragon of considerable strength. Because this line develops very slowly, the investment of time and care required to bring Dratini to its final form is substantial, demanding real commitment from any trainer who takes on the task. The rarity of Dratini in the wild, combined with the prestige attached to its final evolution, has made it one of the most sought-after species since the earliest era of Pokémon research. Scientists continue to study Dratini for insight into how a creature can accumulate such remarkable reserves of latent energy over the course of its slow development, making it a subject of genuine fascination beyond its obvious appeal to trainers.
