Feraligatr is the Big Jaw Pokémon, a pure Water type introduced in the second generation of discovered species and the final stage of one of the Johto region's three starter lines. Its silhouette is unmistakably crocodilian and upright, clad almost entirely in deep blue scaling with a pale cream underside running from jaw to belly. Considerably larger than a human adult, Feraligatr is a massively built creature supported by thick legs, wide clawed feet, and a broad muscular torso. Its defining feature is its jaw — enormous even relative to its considerable frame, lined with interlocking teeth that give this species its category name. Red bony ridges trace along its spine and upper limbs, and while its arms appear relatively short against the rest of its bulk, the claws at their ends are formidable instruments in their own right.
Feraligatr makes its home along the water's edge, favouring the banks of wide rivers, the shores of deep lakes, and the brackish margins where freshwater meets the sea. It is most frequently encountered in the Johto region, where temperate waterways provide the combination of depth, current, and accessible shoreline it prefers. This species is solitary outside of the breeding season, establishing broad territories that it patrols both in the water and along the bank. Activity peaks during daylight hours and at dusk, when visibility and hunting conditions are at their best. Travellers along Johto's rivers are cautioned that a Feraligatr observed near a bank has almost certainly claimed that stretch as its territory, and the species responds to encroachment with little patience and considerable force.
Feraligatr is a carnivore that hunts fish Pokémon, aquatic prey, and smaller land-dwelling species that venture close to the waterline. Its approach is direct: it closes distance swiftly, whether in water or along the bank, and delivers a clamping bite with its massive jaws. The behaviour that follows is its signature — it shakes its head violently from side to side, using powerful neck musculature to tear prey apart in a motion closely mirroring the death roll of real-world crocodilians. In the water, Feraligatr moves with surprising efficiency for its size, and on land it can generate short bursts of speed when pursuing a target. Toward humans it is territorial rather than indiscriminately aggressive, and veteran trainers consistently describe a bonded Feraligatr as focused and disciplined, channelling its ferocity selectively rather than lashing out without purpose.
In battle, Feraligatr operates as a physical attacker first and foremost. Its Attack and Defense are both high, producing a Pokémon that can hit hard and absorb punishment in equal measure. Its speed is workable but not exceptional, meaning faster opponents can create matchup difficulties that a trainer must account for strategically. Feraligatr's standard ability, Torrent, strengthens its Water-type moves when it has taken heavy damage — a rally-from-behind mechanism that can swing a close fight in its final exchanges. Its hidden ability, Sheer Force, takes a fundamentally different approach, forgoing the secondary effects of moves that would normally carry them — such as a chance to flinch the opponent or lower a stat — in favour of a meaningful flat increase to those moves' base power. Paired with a move like Waterfall, Sheer Force produces notably strong output. As a Water type, Feraligatr resists Water, Steel, Fire, and Ice, but Grass and Electric attacks represent genuine vulnerabilities that demand constant awareness.
Feraligatr is the final stage of a three-part evolutionary line that begins with Totodile, the small Water-type starter available to trainers setting out from New Bark Town in Johto. Totodile develops into Croconaw through accumulated battle experience, and Croconaw grows into Feraligatr through the same means — no items, trades, or special conditions are required, only growth earned in the field. As one of three final-form Johto starters alongside Meganium and Typhlosion, Feraligatr occupies a meaningful place in the regional Pokédex and in the memories of trainers who chose Totodile at the outset of their adventure. Researchers have studied Feraligatr's jaw mechanics and bite force extensively, as they represent some of the most powerful measurements recorded for a land-capable Pokémon of comparable size, contributing to a broader understanding of reptilian musculoskeletal adaptation and the limits of biological force generation.
