ENTRY

Golbat is the Bat Pokémon, a dual Poison and Flying type that first appeared in the original generation of Pokémon games. Its body is a deep, vivid purple, with a compact torso from which enormous teal-edged wings extend to a span that dwarfs its small frame. Those wings are membranous and broad, tapering to ragged points that carve a distinctive silhouette in low light. Most striking of all is its mouth, which is enormous relative to the rest of its head, lined with four large curved fangs, and capable of opening wide enough to lock onto prey considerably larger than itself. Unlike its pre-evolution, Golbat possesses small, visible red eyes, granting it rudimentary sight to complement the sophisticated echolocation it relies on when navigating complete darkness. A mature individual, with wings folded, reaches roughly the height of a seated adult human, though in full flight it appears considerably larger.

Golbat favors the deep interior of cave systems across nearly every major region, from the rocky tunnels of Kanto and Johto to the grottos of lands explored in later generations. It thrives in total or near-total darkness, where its echolocation gives it a decisive advantage over prey and rivals alike. Populations cluster in areas of limited air circulation and steady moisture, the damp walls and still passages of underground tunnels suiting it well. Within its own species Golbat is highly social, roosting in dense colonies suspended from cave ceilings, though it turns immediately territorial when disturbed. Encounters above ground are uncommon and almost entirely nocturnal; a Golbat spotted outside a cave after dark is almost always mid-hunt, tracking warm-blooded prey by the rhythmic sound of a heartbeat.

Golbat is a sanguivore, sustaining itself primarily on the blood and vital energy of other living creatures. It strikes from darkness, biting swiftly and latching on with its large fangs. A trait noted in field research is its compulsive reluctance to stop feeding once it has begun, continuing to drain its victim even when it has consumed enough that flight becomes difficult and sluggish. This makes unprepared encounters in caves genuinely hazardous, as Golbat pursues prey with single-minded persistence. Beyond feeding, it communicates with colony-mates through high-frequency ultrasonic calls that most humans cannot hear but frequently perceive as a buzzing pressure sensation. Despite its aggressive feeding instincts, a Golbat that forms a sustained bond with a trainer grows noticeably calmer and more attentive over time, a behavioral change that carries real evolutionary implications.

In combat, Golbat relies on two distinct abilities. Its standard ability, Inner Focus, prevents it from flinching when struck by moves that would ordinarily interrupt an action, meaning Golbat can consistently complete its intended move regardless of what its opponent throws at it. Its hidden ability, Infiltrator, allows its attacks to bypass the protective barrier moves opponents use, piercing through Reflect, Light Screen, and Safeguard without difficulty, stripping away those defensive advantages entirely. As a Poison and Flying type, Golbat resists Fighting, Bug, Grass, and Fairy type attacks, and its Flying typing grants it full immunity to Ground type moves. It carries weaknesses to Psychic, Electric, Rock, and Ice, so trainers must choose matchups carefully. Its offensive style leans physical and its speed is genuinely impressive, allowing it to act before many opponents and apply pressure early before they can establish their footing.

Golbat sits in the middle of a three-stage evolutionary line. It evolves from Zubat, the small eyeless bat that inhabits cave entrances across nearly every region, at level twenty-two. From there, Golbat evolves further into Crobat, its fast and formidable final form, but the condition for that evolution is not a level threshold it requires the bond between Golbat and its trainer to reach genuine friendship. This mechanic sets Golbat apart from most of its contemporaries and makes the evolution feel earned rather than automatic. Researchers value Golbat for its echolocation anatomy and the physiology behind its blood-feeding behavior, both areas of ongoing study in Pokémon biology. For trainers, Golbat represents a distinctive kind of partnership: demanding patience and sustained care, but capable, once that trust is established, of evolving into one of the swiftest and most versatile Pokémon in any team.
