Oddish is the Weed Pokémon, a dual Grass and Poison type that has been known to trainers since the very first generation of Pokémon. Its body is compact and roughly oval, covered entirely in deep blue skin, and it stands at roughly ankle height on an adult human. From the crown of its round head sprouts a dense cluster of bright green leaves, giving the species the immediate silhouette of a small root vegetable only halfway pulled from the soil. Oddish has no visible arms, only two short rounded legs suited for slow, shuffling movement, and its wide red eyes lend it an alert, slightly startled expression. The strong contrast between the vivid blue of its body and the fresh green of its leaf tuft makes Oddish unmistakable whenever it ventures into the open.
Oddish is native to grassland environments and appears across a wide range of regions where temperate or warm climates support dense ground-level vegetation. It favors open meadows, the weedy edges of cultivated fields, and the sunlit clearings of sparse woodland, settling wherever the soil is loose and nutrient-rich enough for it to bury itself comfortably during the day. Populations tend to be moderate in density rather than sparse, since Oddish reproduces through seed dispersal and can establish itself in new ground with relative ease given enough time. Outside of breeding season it is a solitary species, and trainers almost never encounter groups of them moving together. Its habits are almost entirely nocturnal: Oddish spends the bulk of daylight hours anchored in the earth and surfaces only after darkness falls to begin its nightly wandering.
During the day, Oddish pushes its face into the soil and draws nutrients upward through the roots it extends from its body, while the leaf crown above the surface gathers sunlight just as an ordinary plant would. This posture serves double duty as camouflage, since a tuft of leaves protruding from loose earth is easy for passing predators to overlook entirely. After dark, Oddish pulls itself free and wanders slowly across the terrain, releasing fine seeds from its leaf tips as it moves through the grass. Those seeds settle into the soil behind it, germinate independently, and over time extend the range of the species across considerable distances without any coordinated effort. Oddish is generally docile toward humans and tends to ignore other Pokémon unless directly threatened, though it releases a faintly sweet but mildly toxic powder when startled, a reflex rooted in its Poison typing that discourages most casual handling.
In battle, Oddish leans heavily on its special attack, which is meaningfully stronger than its physical offense, and it has access to a broad roster of Grass and Poison moves that allow it to inflict status conditions such as sleep and poison rather than relying on raw power alone. Its standard ability, Chlorophyll, doubles its movement speed under intense sunlight, transforming what is otherwise a sluggish combatant into one capable of outpacing much faster opponents when the weather is cooperating. Its hidden ability, Run Away, ensures that Oddish can always escape from a wild encounter without fail, reflecting the species' instinct toward evasion over direct conflict. The Grass and Poison typing together give it resistance to Grass, Water, Electric, and Fairy moves, but it carries significant vulnerabilities to Fire, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Ground, and Bug attacks, so thoughtful positioning matters. Outside of sunny conditions, Oddish functions best in support roles, softening opponents with status effects and setting up hazards rather than attempting to overpower them outright.
Oddish is the first stage of a three-member evolutionary line. It evolves into Gloom at level twenty-one, gaining considerably greater offensive presence and developing the famously unpleasant odor that the second stage is known for. From Gloom, the line branches depending on which evolutionary stone is applied: a Leaf Stone produces Vileplume, a large flower-bearing Pokémon with exceptional special attack and a dense poisonous pollen, while a Sun Stone produces Bellossom, a graceful dancer that sheds the Poison typing entirely in favor of a lighter, more speed-oriented Grass form. Oddish occupies an early position in the original regional Pokédex and was among the first Grass and Poison types that trainers encountered in the Kanto region, giving many of them their first experience with status-based battling strategies. Researchers who study plant-based Pokémon pay particular attention to Oddish's nightly seed dispersal behavior, noting that the distances an individual covers on foot each night allow the species to colonize new grassland habitats far more effectively than its slow pace might suggest. For trainers, it represents an accessible and rewarding starting point whose branching evolution keeps it relevant well into the later stages of a journey.
