ENTRY

Hypno is a Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in the first generation of games, classified by researchers as the Hypnosis Pokémon. It presents a distinctly humanoid silhouette, standing at roughly the height of an adult human and carrying itself with an unhurried, almost drowsy composure. Its body is covered in short yellow fur, and a thick white ruff of longer fur encircles its neck like a collar, giving the impression of a creature perpetually dressed for some solemn occasion. Its face is broad and heavy-jowled, with a large prominent nose and narrow eyes that seem perpetually half-closed. The defining feature of Hypno is the pendulum it clutches in one hand at all times, a smooth gleaming disc suspended from a short chain that it swings with practiced, rhythmic motions. This pendulum is not merely a tool but an extension of the creature's psychic nature, and trainers in the field are firmly advised never to stare at it for any length of time.

Hypno is found primarily in grassland biomes, where open terrain gives it room to patrol its territory with an unhurried stride. It tends to favor the margins of forests where grasslands give way to tree cover, allowing it to retreat into shadow when it wishes to avoid unwanted contact. Its range spans multiple regions, and populations are generally sparse, as Hypno is a solitary Pokémon by nature and rarely tolerates the presence of others of its kind outside the breeding season. It shows no strong preference for particular seasons or climates, though it is most frequently encountered at dusk and in the quiet hours before dawn, when its hypnotic abilities are most effective against prey that is already naturally drowsy. Trainers who track Hypno in the field consistently note that it seems drawn to areas frequented by humans, possibly because human dreamers offer richer psychic sustenance than wild Pokémon.

Hypno sustains itself by inducing sleep in other creatures and absorbing the psychic energy released by their dreams. To accomplish this, it swings its pendulum steadily before a target, flooding the subject's mind with deep hypnotic suggestion until consciousness fades. The absorbed dreams appear to nourish it much the way food nourishes other Pokémon, and particularly vivid or emotionally intense dreams are said to leave Hypno visibly refreshed. Field researchers and Pokémon Rangers have documented numerous cases in which Hypno lured human children away from settlements by projecting pleasant, enticing impressions into their sleeping minds, a behavior that has contributed to longstanding wariness of the species in populated areas. Despite this unsettling reputation, a Hypno that harbors no immediate hunger shows no aggression toward those it has not targeted, and a well-trained specimen can be remarkably calm and cooperative with its trainer. It communicates through low, rhythmic vocalizations and through projected impressions of calm that sensitive humans sometimes experience as a sudden, unexplained drowsiness.

In battle, Hypno is defined above all by its exceptional special defense, which allows it to weather a broad range of incoming special attacks that would overwhelm frailer Psychic-type Pokémon. Its offensive stats are modest and roughly balanced between physical and special attack, and its speed is below average, meaning it relies on endurance and careful positioning rather than swiftness. Its standard ability, Insomnia, makes it entirely immune to sleep-inducing moves, a fitting trait for a species that spends its existence inflicting that very condition on others. Its second standard ability, Forewarn, grants immediate knowledge of the most powerful move in an opponent's moveset the moment Hypno enters the field, providing a valuable tactical advantage in longer fights. The hidden ability Inner Focus prevents it from flinching under attack, ensuring its concentration holds even under sustained pressure. As a Psychic type it performs strongly against Fighting and Poison opponents, but Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks represent its meaningful vulnerabilities, and trainers must account for those when fielding it.

Hypno is the final stage of a two-stage evolutionary line that begins with Drowzee, a smaller, tapir-like Psychic-type Pokémon encountered in many of the same regions. Drowzee evolves into Hypno at level twenty-six, at which point it adopts its fully humanoid posture, gains the pendulum that defines its hunting method, and transitions from passive dreamer to active hypnotist. There is no evolution beyond Hypno. Within the Kanto Pokédex the two form a compact line focused entirely on psychic dream manipulation, making them among the earliest examples in the series of Pokémon whose ecology is built around consuming the mental energy of other living creatures. Researchers who study psychic phenomena are particularly interested in Hypno because its feeding mechanism offers one of the few observable cases of psychic energy transfer documented in the natural world. Trainers prize it for its staying power in extended matches and for the disruptive potential of its hypnosis-based moveset, which has continued to find a place in competitive battling long after its first appearance.
