ENTRY

Lanturn is the Light Pokémon, a dual Water and Electric type that was first encountered during the explorations of the second generation of Pokémon research. In appearance, it strongly resembles a deep-sea anglerfish: its body is rounded and compact, covered in a deep blue coloring with a paler underside, and it moves through the water on a pair of small lateral fins and a wide, dark-edged tail. Its most immediately striking feature is the long, slender antenna rising from the top of its head and curving forward, ending in a sphere of intensely bright light. That luminous organ is capable of illuminating the ocean's surface from a depth of more than three miles, a fact that consistently astonishes marine researchers encountering the species for the first time. Lanturn's body stands roughly as tall as a young child, but it is deceptively solid and heavy for its size, built more for endurance than for speed.

Lanturn makes its home in the open ocean, with a strong preference for deep-water environments where natural light from the sun does not reach. The species has been documented in the seas surrounding the Johto region and appears in ocean trenches and midwater zones across multiple bodies of water. It is fundamentally a solitary creature, with individuals maintaining loose personal territories in the darkness of the deep sea. Surface sightings are rare and tend to occur at night, when Lanturn occasionally ascends into shallower water, likely following prey movements. Sailors and coastal communities have reported mysterious, slowly drifting lights beneath the surface of nighttime seas for generations, and many of these observations are now credited to Lanturn. No pronounced seasonal migration has been confirmed, though prey availability appears to influence where individual Lanturn spend extended periods.

Lanturn is a nocturnal hunter by habit, and its strategy centers almost entirely on its glowing antenna. Prey in the deep ocean is drawn toward the light naturally, and once a target approaches, Lanturn releases a powerful electric discharge to stun it before feeding. This method is efficient and low-effort for the Pokémon, requiring little in the way of physical pursuit. Away from feeding, Lanturn displays a notably calm and unhurried temperament. Trainers report that the species is gentle in captivity and rarely initiates confrontation. Lanturn is believed to communicate with others of its kind through changes in the rhythm and brightness of its light organ, cycling through patterns that researchers have documented but not yet fully interpreted. Pairing between individuals has been observed briefly during breeding periods, but the species otherwise lives alone.

Lanturn's greatest asset in a battle setting is its durability, which is substantially higher than its offensive or defensive statistics suggest at first glance. Its primary ability, Volt Absorb, causes incoming Electric-type attacks to restore Lanturn's health rather than deal damage, converting a potential vulnerability into a source of recovery. Its secondary ability, Illuminate, has no direct effect in combat but causes wild Pokémon encounters to occur more frequently, making it a useful incidental tool for trainers searching specific routes. The hidden ability, Water Absorb, applies the same healing effect to Water-type moves. Together, the Water and Electric typing provides resistance to Water, Fire, Ice, Steel, and Flying attacks, while Grass, Ground, and Electric moves that Lanturn cannot absorb remain effective against it. Its battle role favors a specially oriented, defensive pivot: it absorbs hits, recovers through its abilities, and retaliates with Water and Electric attacks targeted at opponents that struggle against those types.

Lanturn represents the final stage of a two-member evolutionary line. It evolves from Chinchou, a small, spherical Pokémon that shares the Water and Electric dual typing from the beginning of its life. Chinchou becomes Lanturn through leveling up to a specific point in its growth, with no stones, trades, or secondary conditions required. Lanturn does not evolve further. The line is among the earliest in the Pokédex to present the Water and Electric combination, a pairing that gives the Pokémon genuine coverage against a wide range of opponents. Marine biologists and Pokémon researchers alike find Lanturn's bioluminescent organ compelling: the light-producing structure is thought to operate through a biochemical process involving specialized internal bacteria, and understanding it more fully may yield insights into deep-sea biology more broadly. For trainers, Lanturn is valued as a steady and adaptable partner, one whose unassuming appearance in the dark water conceals a resilient and strategically flexible battler.
