ENTRY

Mantine is the Kite Pokémon, a dual Water and Flying type introduced in the second generation from the Johto region. In form, it closely resembles a manta ray, with a broad, flattened body and two enormous pectoral fins that spread outward like the wings of a glider. Its dorsal side is a deep purple-blue, while its underside is pale and creamy, and two distinctive circular markings on its pectoral fins give it a face-like appearance when viewed from above. From fin tip to fin tip, Mantine's wingspan is considerably wider than a full-grown human is tall, making its silhouette immediately recognizable in shallow sunlit water. A long, tapering tail trails behind its body, and its underside is frequently occupied by Remoraid, smaller fish Pokémon that attach themselves to feed on the scraps Mantine leaves in its wake.

Mantine inhabits the open ocean, preferring warm tropical and subtropical seas where currents are strong and food is abundant. It is found across a wide coastal range, including the seas surrounding Johto and Kanto as well as the island chains of Alola, where it appears in especially healthy numbers. During the day it tends to cruise at mid-depth, rising toward the surface when the water is calm and the sun is warm. Mantine is not strictly solitary; small, loosely associated groups occasionally travel together, though they do not form the tight schools that smaller aquatic Pokémon favor. No rigid migration route has been confirmed, but Mantine is known to follow warmer currents when the sea cools, drifting toward shallower coastal waters where human encounters become more common.

Mantine feeds primarily on small fish and plankton, sweeping through the water with its wide mouth open to filter meals as it travels. Its temperament is calm and unhurried, and it shows little aggression toward humans or other Pokémon unless directly provoked. It is entirely unbothered by the Remoraid that cling to its body, tolerating them without apparent concern as they scavenge its leftovers in a relationship that costs Mantine nothing obvious and gives the smaller fish both food and protection. When conditions are favorable, Mantine gathers speed beneath the surface and launches itself clear of the waves, briefly gliding above the water before re-entering with a heavy splash. Researchers believe this leaping behavior may be connected to courtship rituals, to social signaling between individuals, or simply to a physical expression of the momentum this wide-bodied species builds during open-water travel.

In battle, Mantine can draw on one of three abilities. Swift Swim doubles its movement speed whenever rain falls on the field, transforming it into a surprisingly quick combatant under the right weather conditions. Water Absorb converts incoming Water-type attacks into healing energy rather than damage, neutralizing one of the most common attack types in oceanic battle environments. Its hidden ability, Water Veil, prevents it from being burned, shielding it from the gradual damage and weakening that burn would otherwise impose. Mantine's most defining combat trait is its exceptional capacity to withstand special attacks, which stands among the very highest of any Water-type Pokémon. It is not a powerful physical striker and channels only modest force through its special moves, but it can absorb a remarkable volume of specially-based punishment. Its dual typing creates vulnerabilities to Electric, Rock, Grass, and Ice moves, and its physical bulk is noticeably more limited than its special resilience, so it struggles when forced to absorb strong physical blows directly.

Mantine is the evolved form of Mantyke, a smaller and rounder Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. Mantyke evolves into Mantine through an unusual ecological condition: it must level up while a Remoraid is present somewhere in the trainer's active party, a requirement that reflects the interspecies bond these two Pokémon share from infancy into adulthood. This evolutionary trigger is one of the more memorable in the Pokédex and has made the Mantine line a subject of ongoing interest among researchers studying Pokémon co-evolution and interspecies dependency. Mantine holds a rare dual Water and Flying typing shared by only a handful of Pokémon, making it distinctive within both type categories. In the Alola region its significance extends well beyond biology, as local trainers developed an entire competitive sport around riding Mantine across ocean surf, cementing its place as one of the most recognized and beloved aquatic Pokémon in the known world.
