Marill is the Aqua Mouse Pokémon, a dual Water and Fairy type first introduced in the second generation of Pokémon. Small and nearly spherical, it stands roughly knee-height on a young child, its compact body covered in bright sky-blue fur. Large disc-shaped ears top its round head, and its wide dark eyes give it a perpetually alert expression. Its most defining feature is its tail: a thin coiled appendage ending in a buoyant blue orb filled with an oil lighter than water itself, which acts as a natural flotation device when Marill navigates strong currents. Its belly is white, contrasting cleanly with the vivid blue of the rest of its body, and its limbs are short, softly rounded nubs. Despite a small and gentle appearance, Marill is physically resilient and considerably more capable than its compact frame suggests.
Marill makes its home along the edges of clean, fast-moving bodies of water. It favors mountain streams, clear rivers, and the rocky banks of highland lakes, particularly those fed by cold, oxygen-rich currents. First catalogued in the Johto region, it has since been observed wherever suitable freshwater habitat exists across multiple regions. Marill is a social Pokémon, typically found in small groups bobbing along river surfaces with their tails extended for buoyancy. These groups share stretches of water peacefully, showing little territorial aggression toward neighboring clusters. Marill is most active during daylight hours, dividing its time between foraging, swimming, and play near the water's edge. Solitary individuals spotted away from water are usually juveniles that have wandered from their group.
Marill feeds primarily on aquatic plants, algae, and submerged vegetation growing along riverbeds and lake margins. When grazing in fast currents, it extends its tail and lets the buoyant orb act as an anchor, keeping it from being swept downstream. This elegant adaptation allows it to access food sources that smaller or less specialized Pokémon cannot safely reach. In temperament, Marill is curious and approachable, typically investigating unfamiliar people or Pokémon with cautious interest before deciding whether to come closer. Among its own kind, communication takes the form of soft high-pitched calls and expressive tail-waving gestures. During breeding season, groups become more cohesive and protective, with older individuals keeping younger ones near the water's edge. Trainers who have raised Marill from an early stage consistently describe it as loyal and affectionate, a Pokémon that shadows its trainer during rest and proves easy to bond with over time.
In battle, Marill can draw on two standard abilities and one hidden ability, each shaping its role in a distinct way. The first, Thick Fat, halves the damage Marill receives from Fire-type and Ice-type moves, giving it meaningful durability against two of the most widely used offensive types. The second, and the more celebrated, is Huge Power, which doubles Marill's physical Attack strength during combat. This single ability converts what would otherwise be a modest offensive presence into a genuinely threatening force, making Marill hit far harder than its small frame would suggest. Its hidden ability, Sap Sipper, grants immunity to Grass-type moves and raises Marill's Attack by one stage whenever it absorbs such an attack, neatly transforming one of its natural vulnerabilities into a tactical opportunity. As a Water and Fairy type, Marill enjoys immunity to Dragon-type moves and resistance to Fire, Water, Ice, Bug, and Dark type attacks. It remains vulnerable to Grass, Electric, Poison, and Steel type moves, which trainers must account for when building a team around it. Marill's speed is modest, meaning it typically endures an incoming hit before retaliating, but its solid defenses and the raw striking power granted by Huge Power make it a credible threat in the right team structure.
Marill occupies the middle stage of a three-member evolutionary line. It evolves from Azurill, a small round Pokémon introduced in the third generation, when Azurill levels up while sharing a high degree of friendship with its trainer. Marill then evolves into the larger and considerably more powerful Azumarill upon reaching level eighteen. The line is notable for the way it was assembled across two generations: Azurill was added later as a pre-evolution to an already established species, expanding the origin story of a Pokémon that many players had known for a full generation. Marill also holds a singular place in Pokémon cultural memory. Before the second generation's official release, widespread fan rumors described a mysterious blue mouse Pokémon called Pikablu that could supposedly be obtained through secret in-game methods. Though entirely unfounded, that story generated remarkable public excitement and made Marill famous before most players had ever encountered it in an official game. Researchers today continue to study it for its elegant tail adaptation and for the compelling way it demonstrates how a single battle ability can wholly redefine a species' competitive identity.
