ENTRY

Sunkern is the Seed Pokémon, a pure Grass-type introduced in the second generation. It is among the smallest Pokémon in existence, roughly the size of a child's fist, and it resembles a bright yellow seed wrapped in a pale white band around its middle. From the top of its compact, spherical body grows a small green sprout, giving it the unmistakable silhouette of a newly germinated plant. Its surface is smooth and rounded, and its vivid yellow coloring stands out sharply against any grassy backdrop. The sprout at its crown, with its tiny curled leaves, is the only outward sign that this round little form holds any botanical potential at all.

Sunkern is found primarily in grasslands and open meadows, where sunlight is plentiful and the ground stays soft and nourishing. It is most commonly encountered in the Johto region, though scattered populations appear across other temperate grassland areas throughout the world. The species is typically solitary, and individual Sunkern rest quietly among tall grasses, often going unnoticed by passing trainers. One of its most peculiar and widely documented behaviors is the tendency to drop suddenly from the sky without warning, landing in grassy fields with no apparent explanation. This aerial descent has puzzled researchers for generations, since Sunkern has no visible means of flight. It is most active during daylight hours when the sun is at its strongest, which aligns with its fundamental reliance on solar energy to survive.

Sunkern's daily routine revolves almost entirely around sunlight and the energy it provides. It is known to sustain itself primarily on morning dew collected from blades of grass overnight, consuming very little else and surviving on the most minimal of diets. When sunlight falls on its body, it absorbs that energy directly in a manner consistent with its deeply plant-like physiology. Field observers describe Sunkern as calm and conflict-averse, content to rest in a sunny spot for hours without moving. Yet when threatened by a predator, particularly a Spearow, it responds by violently shaking the leaves at its crown, a sudden motion meant to startle and drive away the attacker. Trainers who raise Sunkern find it to be a quiet and undemanding companion, gentle in temperament and slow to panic.

In battle, Sunkern's three abilities are all shaped by environmental conditions rather than raw physical strength. Its first standard ability, Chlorophyll, doubles its speed when strong sunlight fills the battlefield, allowing it to outpace many opponents it would otherwise trail. Its second standard ability, Solar Power, amplifies its special attack strength considerably under direct sunlight, though it drains a portion of Sunkern's own health with each passing turn. The hidden ability, Early Bird, allows it to shake off sleep status much faster than most Pokémon, halving the number of turns it spends unable to act. As a pure Grass-type, Sunkern is vulnerable to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug-type attacks, a wide spread of weaknesses that leaves it exposed on many fronts. Its statistics are uniformly low across every category, which means it depends entirely on weather support and careful tactical positioning rather than any single impressive trait to contribute in a fight.

Sunkern is the first stage of a two-member evolutionary line. It evolves into Sunflora through exposure to a Sun Stone, a radiant mineral that concentrates solar energy to catalyze Sunkern's transformation into a fully bloomed sunflower form. Sunflora is substantially larger and more capable, with meaningful improvements to its special attack and special defense. Within the Pokédex as a whole, Sunkern carries a notable distinction, as its combined base statistics are the lowest of any known Pokémon species, a record that has made it a subject of genuine scientific curiosity. Researchers find it remarkable that a creature so physically limited can nonetheless thrive in the wild, and they study its minimal metabolism, its solar dependence, and its seed-like body plan as a case study in biological economy. For trainers, Sunkern represents a patient investment, a fragile beginning that, with the right stone and the right care, grows into something far more formidable.
