ENTRY

Aipom is the Long Tail Pokémon, a Normal-type species that made its debut in the second generation of discoveries alongside the Pokémon of the Johto region. It presents as a small, lively primate with a compact, rounded build that stands roughly half a meter tall when upright, reaching no higher than the knee of an average adult human. Its fur is a warm, uniform shade of purple across most of its body, with a pale cream face framed by large, rounded ears and bright, curious eyes. The feature that defines Aipom above all else is the extraordinary tail that extends from its lower back, terminating not in a simple point but in a three-fingered, hand-like appendage fully capable of gripping, lifting, and manipulating objects with remarkable precision. This tail-hand is so central to the species that its very name and its official category as the Long Tail Pokémon both draw attention to it directly.

Aipom makes its home in dense forest environments, favoring areas with tall, mature tree canopies that offer continuous opportunities for climbing and swinging between branches. In the wild it is encountered most often in the wooded routes and forested routes of Johto, though it has been documented in similarly structured forests in other regions wherever suitable canopy cover exists. The species strongly prefers temperate and subtropical woodland and is almost never found on open ground for any extended period, spending the vast majority of its life high above the forest floor. Aipom tends to gather in loose, small groups rather than traveling in strict solitude, and encounters with pairs or tight-knit troops are more common than sightings of a single individual. It follows a diurnal schedule, foraging actively through the morning and socializing through the afternoon before retreating into the upper branches as daylight fades.

Aipom feeds primarily on fruits and berries harvested from the forest canopy, and it typically gathers food using its tail-hand rather than its actual forelimbs, plucking ripe specimens from branches and passing them directly to its mouth while its arms remain largely at rest. Field researchers consistently describe this Pokémon as relying on its tail for nearly every precise task in daily life, from food gathering to clinging upside down to branches while resting, with its hands appearing almost secondary by comparison. Aipom has a famously cheerful and mischievous temperament, and wild individuals are noted for approaching humans with curiosity and opportunistically snatching small objects such as food or shiny accessories from nearby people using their nimble tail-hands. This pilfering behavior, while occasionally frustrating for unprepared travelers, is rarely accompanied by genuine aggression. Among members of its own species, Aipom communicates through a mixture of vocalizations and expressive tail gestures, and individuals that become comfortable with a trainer can grow notably affectionate over time.

In battle, Aipom carries two standard abilities and one hidden ability that each suit a different aspect of its character. Run Away guarantees that Aipom can always flee successfully from a wild encounter when it chooses, reflecting the cautious instincts of a quick-moving forest creature that knows when a situation is unfavorable. Pickup allows Aipom to recover items that an opponent has consumed or discarded during a fight, and between battles it may occasionally find useful held items on the ground, making it a surprisingly resourceful traveling companion. Its hidden ability, Skill Link, is notably powerful in the right hands, ensuring that any move which strikes multiple times in a single turn always connects the maximum number of times rather than landing a random count, which transforms moves like Fury Swipes into a far more reliable and damaging option. As a pure Normal type, Aipom resists no common attack category but does carry a complete immunity to Ghost-type moves. Its sole defensive weakness lies against Fighting-type attacks, which hit it with increased force. Offensively, Aipom leans toward physical techniques and benefits considerably from its above-average speed, allowing it to strike before most opponents it faces and making fast, hit-and-run tactics its most effective style of play.

Aipom occupies the opening position of a two-stage evolutionary line and has no prior form from which it develops. For the entirety of Generation Two through Generation Three, it was the only member of its lineage, and its evolution remained undiscovered until Generation Four introduced a remarkable condition tied directly to its most characteristic trait. Aipom evolves into Ambipom when it gains experience while already knowing the move Double Hit, an unusual requirement that reflects how the species matures by mastering the very technique associated with gaining a second tail-hand. This conditional mechanic places Aipom among a small group of Pokémon whose evolutionary path demands specific move knowledge rather than simple level thresholds. Among researchers, Aipom draws sustained academic interest as a case study in functional limb reassignment, illustrating how evolution can elevate a secondary appendage to the role of primary manipulator. For trainers, it remains an appealing early partner whose speed and hidden potential with Skill Link make it a rewarding Pokémon to develop carefully on the path toward the twin-tailed Ambipom.
