Haunter is the Gas Pokémon, a Ghost and Poison type introduced in the first generation. Its body is composed entirely of a shifting, semi-transparent purple gas rather than any solid form. Two disembodied clawed hands extend outward from the dark gaseous mass that makes up its torso, and its face is dominated by a wide grin of jagged teeth, a pair of glowing eyes, and a long thin tongue that often flickers freely in the air. Haunter floats at roughly the eye level of an average human adult, though its gaseous nature makes any precise measurement somewhat meaningless. Its most remarkable physical trait is its near-total lack of solidity: it can reshape and compress itself to pass through stone walls, sealed doors, and any other physical barrier without resistance, giving it the appearance of a creature that does not fully belong to the material world.
Haunter makes its home in caves, abandoned towers, old ruins, and any location where darkness is consistent and human activity is minimal. It has been observed across cave networks and derelict structures in nearly every region where Ghost-type Pokémon are recorded, including the ancient towers and cave systems of Kanto and Johto. It is an almost exclusively nocturnal creature, active after dark and retreating into walls or ceilings when daylight returns. Haunter is solitary by nature and rarely congregates, though multiple individuals may share a large enough cave without open conflict. Its population is difficult to count because it can conceal itself inside solid surfaces, becoming invisible at will. Field researchers note that certain Haunter appear to linger in the same location for many years, drawn to sites where intense human emotion, including grief, fear, or prolonged suffering, has left what some describe as a psychic residue in the environment.
Haunter does not consume food in any conventional sense. It sustains itself by feeding on the life force and emotional energy of living creatures, approaching in complete silence and using its ability to move through barriers to close the distance undetected. Its tongue is its primary tool outside of battle: contact with it is said to drain warmth and willpower from the target simultaneously, leaving them weakened and confused. Despite this predatory nature, Haunter displays a mischievous curiosity toward humans that goes beyond simple hunger. It is frequently reported seeking out people apparently for the pleasure of frightening them, then retreating when chased. Old folklore across multiple regions holds that Haunter is not native to this world at all, describing it as a being that slipped in from an adjacent dimension, a claim its ability to pass through physical matter does little to dispel.
In combat, Haunter functions as a fast and powerful special attacker. Its Special Attack stat is exceptionally high for an unevolved form, enabling it to deal serious damage with Ghost and Poison type moves such as Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb. Its Speed is also strong, allowing it to outpace a wide range of opponents. Its only ability, Levitate, grants it a full immunity to Ground-type attacks by keeping it perpetually airborne, removing one of the coverage options opponents might otherwise rely on. The Ghost and Poison typing provides immunity to Normal and Fighting type moves and resistance to Grass, Poison, Bug, and Fairy type attacks, giving Haunter meaningful defensive coverage against many common threats. It is most vulnerable to Ghost, Dark, Ground, and Psychic type moves, and its hit points and physical defenses are low enough that a single well-placed super-effective hit can remove it from battle. Haunter rewards trainers who can keep it safe from those specific threats and leverage its offensive firepower before the opponent can answer.
Haunter is the second of three forms in its evolutionary line. It evolves from Gastly at level twenty-five and evolves further into Gengar when traded to another trainer. That trade condition has made the Gastly line one of the most socially connected evolutionary families in the Pokédex since the first games were released, as completing the chain has always required cooperation between at least two players. Haunter already demonstrates much of the raw offensive capability that makes Gengar one of the most feared Ghost types in competitive play, and some trainers deliberately hold it at this stage to retain Levitate before facing certain challenges. As a subject of scientific interest, Haunter draws considerable attention for its dimensional properties. Its ability to traverse solid matter is not replicated by any other Ghost type of the same era, and ongoing research into how it interacts with physical space continues to produce findings that challenge conventional understanding of what a Ghost-type Pokémon can be.
