ENTRY

Gastly is classified as the Gas Pokémon, a Ghost and Poison type originating from the first generation of discovered species. Its body consists almost entirely of a thin, toxic gas that coils and swirls into a roughly spherical form, giving it a silhouette reminiscent of a dark, smoky orb. The gas is predominantly a deep purple-black in color, and within this cloud float two wide, pale eyes that seem to have no face behind them, lending Gastly an eerie and unmistakable appearance. When its gaseous form is at its most compact Gastly is small relative to a human adult, but the gas that makes up its body can expand outward to envelop a target several times its apparent size. It has no limbs, no solid core, and virtually no measurable mass in any conventional sense. A faint halo of lighter purple vapor perpetually surrounds its main body, making its exact boundaries difficult to perceive and giving it an appearance that is genuinely hard to focus on in low light.

Gastly is most commonly encountered in caves, abandoned buildings, and places where death or decay have created an atmosphere that this species finds hospitable. It thrives in dark, enclosed environments with little air circulation, as strong winds can disperse its gaseous form and force it to reconstitute itself at considerable effort. In the Kanto region it is famously associated with Lavender Town and the tower that stands there, a location with deep cultural ties to deceased Pokémon. Across other regions it appears in ruined structures, graveyards, dense forests after nightfall, and the depths of cave systems. Gastly is entirely nocturnal and rarely surfaces during daylight, retreating to the darkest corners of its haunt as sunlight approaches. It generally exists alone or in small loose clusters, and while it does not stake out territory aggressively, multiple Gastly frequently drift toward the same locations drawn by similar environmental preferences.

Gastly is fundamentally a predator of an unusual kind. Rather than physical force, it relies on its toxic gas to disorient, incapacitate, and gradually drain the vitality of those it encounters. The gas it exhales causes unconsciousness in small animals and humans alike if breathed in even briefly, and Gastly exploits this effect opportunistically, drifting close to sleeping or unsuspecting targets and enveloping them without warning. Folklore in regions where Gastly is common holds that a sudden, unexplained drowsiness in a dark room is often the work of one of these Pokémon passing nearby. Despite this predatory behavior, Gastly displays a mischievous and almost playful temperament, and researchers who have observed it in the field note that it seems to act more from instinct and curiosity than from any genuine malice. It is drawn to the warmth and life energy of living beings, and trainers who have bonded with one report that it can be surprisingly affectionate in its own strange fashion.

In battle Gastly relies on its known ability, Levitate, which causes it to float perpetually above the surface beneath it and renders it immune to moves that strike the ground under a Pokémon. This advantage is particularly meaningful given that its Poison typing would otherwise leave it open to Ground type attacks. As a Ghost and Poison type it resists Bug, Grass, Poison, and Fairy type moves, and it is fully immune to Normal and Fighting type attacks, making it difficult for many physically oriented opponents to score reliable hits. However it carries genuine weaknesses to Ground, Ghost, Psychic, and Dark type moves. Gastly's greatest asset is its exceptional capacity for special offense, making it a potent user of Ghost and Poison type moves that draw on that attacking strength. Its speed is solid without being outstanding. Gastly performs best as a hit and run special attacker, exploiting its immunities and offensive power before an opponent can target its notably fragile defenses.

Gastly is the first stage of a three member evolutionary line. It evolves into Haunter upon reaching level twenty five, gaining a more defined silhouette, shadowy hands, and a more imposing presence while retaining its fundamentally gaseous nature. Haunter in turn evolves into Gengar when traded to another trainer, undergoing a striking physical transformation that produces one of the most recognized and formidable Ghost type Pokémon known to researchers. This evolutionary line holds a notable place in the history of Pokémon study as one of the earliest documented Ghost type families, and as a group it pushed early researchers to reconsider what constitutes physical matter in living Pokémon. Gastly itself continues to attract scientific attention because the biochemical questions raised by its gaseous composition remain only partially understood, and its demonstrated ability to affect the consciousness of other living beings through chemical means is an area researchers continue to investigate.
