ENTRY

Gengar is the Shadow Pokémon, a dual Ghost and Poison type species that has been part of the Pokédex since the very first generation of Pokémon. Its body is roughly the size of a large human torso compact, round, and a deep shade of purple that darkens toward near-black across its back. The silhouette is instantly recognizable: a wide, toothy grin dominates its face, framed by small glinting red eyes and set beneath a crown of irregular spiky protrusions along the top of its head. Its limbs are short and stubby, ending in three-clawed hands and feet, and its body radiates a persistent, penetrating cold. A short curved tail extends from behind. Despite its playful expression, something distinctly unsettling lingers in its appearance the grin never quite reaches the eyes, and the edges of its form seem to blur slightly, as if it is not fully present in the physical world.

Gengar is most commonly found in caves, where darkness runs deep and the temperature stays cold. It has adapted well to the shadow-rich environments of underground caverns, abandoned ruins, and old buildings where light rarely reaches. Its population is scattered across many regions, tending to concentrate wherever human habitation gives way to neglected or fear-soaked places crumbling towers, forgotten paths through old forests, and the darker corners of towns where streetlamps go dark. It is primarily a nocturnal species, becoming most active after sundown and retreating into its shadowy resting places as daylight approaches. Gengar tends to be solitary by nature, though researchers have occasionally observed two or three individuals sharing a single large cave system without apparent conflict. Under a full moon, its behaviour shifts notably; it grows bolder and more mischievous, lurking along roadsides and in the shadows cast by buildings, watching passersby with evident amusement.

Gengar sustains itself by absorbing warmth and life energy from its surroundings, which explains the notable drop in ambient temperature that field researchers report whenever one is nearby. Thermometers in rooms where Gengar dwells regularly read several degrees below the surrounding air temperature, a phenomenon that has given rise to considerable folklore about cursed houses and haunted locations. It is not by nature aggressive toward humans, but it is deeply mischievous, taking evident delight in startling people and mimicking the shadows of those who cross its path before retreating before it can be caught. Trainers who have bonded with a Gengar describe it as loyal and even affectionate, but with a persistent streak of dark humour that surfaces unpredictably. It communicates through low, echoing laughter that carries through walls and closed doors, a sound many people hear before they realise its source. Its Poison typing, while less central to its identity than the Ghost element, reflects a subtle toxicity that pervades its presence.

In battle, Gengar is among the most dangerous special attackers available to any trainer. Its Special Attack is extraordinarily high, allowing it to land devastating blows with moves that channel shadow, poison, and psychic energy. Its Speed is equally impressive, frequently allowing it to move before opponents can respond. Its sole ability in most encounters is Cursed Body, which gives it a meaningful chance to disable any move that lands against it, effectively shutting down a foe's strongest option mid-battle. Its Ghost and Poison typing creates an interesting defensive profile: it is completely immune to Normal and Fighting type attacks, neutralising many common physical threats. However, it carries genuine vulnerabilities to Ground, Psychic, Dark, and opposing Ghost type attacks, and its physical bulk is modest, meaning that any of those moves connecting from a fast attacker can end its participation in the fight abruptly. It excels in fast-paced matchups where its Speed lets it move first and its Special Attack closes exchanges in a single blow.

Gengar is the final form in a three-stage evolutionary line that begins with Gastly, a small Ghost and Poison type that floats as little more than a sphere of toxic vapour surrounded by dark mist. Gastly evolves into Haunter at level twenty-five, gaining more defined limbs and a persistent, disembodied quality. Haunter then evolves into Gengar through trade when it is exchanged between trainers, the act of changing hands triggers the final transformation. This trade requirement made Gengar one of the original examples of a Pokémon whose evolution depended on social interaction between players, a design choice that gave it particular significance in the franchise's history. Researchers study Gengar closely because of the physiological questions raised by its ability to lower ambient temperature, pass through solid surfaces, and exist in a state that straddles the boundary between the physical and the spectral. Among Ghost type specialists, it remains a foundational subject of study, and among trainers, its combination of raw power and iconic design has kept it among the most sought-after partners since the very beginning.
