Miltank is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation, classified officially as the Milk Cow Pokémon. It stands upright on two sturdy legs, reaching roughly the shoulder height of an average adult human, and carries a broad, rounded build that emphasizes its role as a creature of sustenance rather than combat. Its body is covered in smooth pink skin marked by irregular black patches, most visibly across its back and haunches. Its face is broad and bovine, framed by short rounded ears and a pair of small black horns, and its most immediately distinctive feature is the large pale udder it carries on its underside, which produces the celebrated beverage that has made this species known throughout many regions.
Miltank is most commonly found in open grasslands, rolling meadows, and temperate plains where grasses grow thick and varied. It is native to the Johto region, where herds have roamed the fields east of Goldenrod City for generations, and populations have since been observed in Unova, Kalos, and other regions with similarly mild, grassy climates. Miltank is a gregarious Pokémon that strongly prefers the company of others of its kind, moving through open terrain in loose herds that number anywhere from a handful to several dozen individuals. It is most active during daylight hours, spending the bulk of its day grazing and wandering, and settles into quiet rest as evening falls. Farms dedicated to Miltank husbandry exist across multiple regions, making it one of the more visibly domesticated species in the Pokémon world.
In terms of day-to-day behaviour, Miltank is calm and even-tempered by default, approaching humans with curiosity rather than hostility provided it does not feel threatened. It communicates through low, resonant vocalizations and physical contact within the herd, and individuals that have been raised around people often seek out gentle handling. Miltank produces approximately five liters of milk each day, and this output increases when the Pokémon is relaxed and well-nourished, which has shaped its care practices considerably. Its milk, widely sold under the name Moomoo Milk, is extraordinarily dense in nutrients and has long been used by trainers as a field restorative for injured or fatigued Pokémon. Despite its gentle day-to-day manner, Miltank will react with surprising force if its herd or young are threatened, and experienced trainers note that a startled Miltank can be far more formidable than its peaceable reputation suggests.
In battle, Miltank is a defensively oriented physical Pokémon with notable speed and impressive physical bulk. Its Defense stat is among the highest of fully independent single-stage Pokémon, and its Speed allows it to act before many opponents that might otherwise appear more threatening. Its standard ability, Thick Fat, reduces damage from Fire-type and Ice-type moves by half, patching two coverage angles that Normal types would otherwise leave entirely open. Its second standard ability, Scrappy, allows its Normal-type and Fighting-type attacks to make contact with Ghost-type Pokémon, which are normally immune to those move categories entirely, effectively eliminating one of Normal typing's most significant blind spots. Its hidden ability, Sap Sipper, causes Grass-type moves directed at it to fail entirely while simultaneously raising its Attack, turning what would be a damaging hit into a stat advantage. As a Normal-type, Miltank is immune to Ghost-type moves and resists nothing, but its sole weakness is the Fighting type. Its most feared offensive tool is Rollout, a move that doubles in power each successive turn it connects and which Miltank can execute with relentless momentum, making sustained engagement particularly punishing for unprepared opponents.
Miltank occupies a unique position in the Pokédex as a standalone species with no evolutionary relatives, though researchers and breeders have long noted its close biological and thematic kinship with Tauros, the Wild Bull Pokémon introduced in the first generation. The two are considered complementary counterparts, representing distinct expressions of the bovine form within the Pokémon world. Miltank does not evolve from any prior stage nor advance into a later form, standing complete as it is throughout its life. Beyond competitive and agricultural significance, Miltank holds a particular place in trainer culture for the infamous difficulty posed by Whitney, the Goldenrod City Gym Leader in Johto, whose Miltank became one of the most talked-about challenges in the early history of Pokémon training. Researchers continue to study its milk production for applications in Pokémon medicine, and its combination of accessibility, utility, and battlefield resilience ensures that it remains a species of lasting relevance.
