ENTRY

Starmie is the Mysterious Pokémon, a Water and Psychic type that first appeared in the original generation of discovered species. Its body consists of two seven-pointed stars fused in a pinwheel arrangement, one layered atop the other and offset so that each inner point peeks between the outer ones. The form is a deep purple, nearly violet, with a smooth gem-like surface that catches light from every angle. At its very center sits what researchers call the core, a crystalline jewel that pulses and cycles through all seven colors of the visible spectrum. Starmie is roughly the size of a large beach umbrella when spread flat, propelling itself through water with a continuous spinning motion along its central axis. There are no visible eyes, limbs, or mouth, and this absence of familiar anatomy is a defining part of what earns the species its Mysterious classification.

Starmie inhabits warm coastal seas, most commonly in clear, relatively shallow ocean waters where sunlight reaches the seafloor. It favors rocky shorelines and coral reef margins, navigating between formations with its compact rotating form. Across multiple regions, the species is found in temperate to tropical marine zones and appears to be solitary by nature, a notable contrast to the shoaling tendencies sometimes seen in its pre-evolved form. Wild encounters are not common, partly because Starmie tends to spend daylight hours at moderate depths, ascending toward the surface after dark when its glowing core serves as a lantern in the open water. Coastal fishermen and divers have long described seeing a slowly shifting light drifting just beneath the surface as one of the signs that Starmie is near.

Starmie is primarily nocturnal, most active after dark when its luminous core attracts smaller sea creatures that it then feeds upon. The spinning motion central to its locomotion also aids in feeding, as the rotation generates gentle currents that draw prey inward. Despite its unusual appearance, Starmie is not regarded as aggressive toward humans, and most wild encounters end with the Pokémon retreating quietly to deeper water. Communication between individuals is believed to involve the shifting color patterns of the core gem rather than any audible signal. Researchers have noted what appear to be synchronized light pulses between two Starmie in close proximity, though the significance of these exchanges is not yet understood. Coastal folklore adds that a Starmie whose core holds a steady, unwavering gold light is said to be reaching toward something beyond the ordinary world, a claim the Mysterious classification does nothing to refute.

In battle, Starmie stands out for its exceptional speed and strong special attacking power. The first of its standard abilities, Illuminate, carries no direct combat function but doubles the frequency of wild Pokémon encounters when the holder leads the party, a useful trait during exploration. Its second standard ability, Natural Cure, heals any major status condition including paralysis, poisoning, burning, freezing, or sleep automatically when Starmie is withdrawn from the field, giving it consistent protection against status-based strategies. The hidden ability, Analytic, increases the strength of Starmie's moves whenever it acts after the opponent in a turn, rewarding deliberate positioning with an offensive bonus. The Water and Psychic combination offers broad offensive coverage, though it introduces vulnerabilities to Grass, Electric, Bug, Ghost, and Dark moves. With limited durability, Starmie relies heavily on its speed to attack before opponents can exploit those openings.

Starmie evolves from Staryu, a single-star Water-type Pokémon, through exposure to a Water Stone. The evolution adds the distinctive second star layer to the silhouette and introduces the Psychic typing that shapes Starmie's identity in both form and function. No further evolution exists, placing Starmie as the final stage of a two-member line. Within the broader Pokédex it represents one of the earliest pairings of Water and Psychic in a single species, a combination that influenced how subsequent generations approached fast, specially oriented Water types. Researchers continue to study the core gem, whose rainbow luminescence has no fully accepted scientific explanation; leading hypotheses suggest the shifting colors reflect the Pokémon's internal physiological state or its response to psychic and electromagnetic signals in the surrounding environment. For trainers, Starmie has remained a consistent presence in competitive play across many generations, prized for the breadth of its movepool and the pressure its speed creates. That enduring relevance, combined with the genuine scientific mystery surrounding its core, makes it one of the most studied and respected species from the original roster.
