ENTRY

Staryu is the Star Shape Pokémon, a pure Water-type species that first appeared in the original generation of documented Pokémon. Its body is shaped precisely like a five-pointed star, flat and rigid, with a warm brown-gold coloring spread evenly across its five symmetrical limbs. At the center of this starlike form sits a large red gemstone core encircled by a golden ring structure, and this luminous organ is the most immediately recognizable feature of the species. Staryu stands approximately knee-height on an average adult human, lightweight and compact despite its hard exterior, and its silhouette is unlike that of any other Pokémon among the earliest entries of the Kanto Pokédex.

Staryu inhabits saltwater environments almost exclusively, favoring shallow coastal waters, rocky tide pools, and the reef systems that fringe ocean shorelines. It is most frequently documented in the sea routes and connected waters of the Kanto region, though it has been observed along coastlines in several other regions as well. During daylight hours Staryu tends to rest near the seafloor, where its coloring provides modest camouflage against sandy or rocky substrates. It is primarily a solitary species, not given to schooling behavior, though individuals coexist peacefully when sharing the same reef or cove without apparent territorial conflict. After dark, Staryu becomes more active, and its red core begins to flash in a rhythmic pattern that intensifies noticeably around midnight, a behavior documented consistently across every studied population.

Staryu sustains itself by consuming plankton and microscopic marine organisms, using the tips of its arms to sweep organic matter toward its central core. It is notably calm and deliberate in temperament, and trainers who work extensively with it frequently describe it as focused and emotionally reserved, attentive to its surroundings without displaying obvious affection or agitation. When confronted by a threat it cannot outmaneuver, Staryu is capable of shedding one or more of its arms, relying on its regenerative biology to regrow the lost tissue so long as the red core remains completely intact. This capacity for regeneration has made Staryu one of the most studied species in marine Pokémon biology. The midnight flash of its core remains a subject of active research, with some field naturalists suggesting it functions as a form of communication tied to celestial cycles, a theory that has long captured the imagination of coastal communities where Staryu populations are well established.

In battle, Staryu relies principally on its speed and its capacity for special attacks, particularly Water-type and Psychic-type moves, and it performs best in engagements where it can act quickly and exploit its natural advantages before an opponent can retaliate. As a Water-type it resists Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel moves, but it is genuinely vulnerable to Grass and Electric attacks, which trainers must account for carefully when deploying it. Its Illuminate ability causes its body to radiate light that raises the frequency of wild Pokémon encounters in the surrounding area, a trait with more utility during field exploration than in direct combat. Natural Cure, its other standard ability, removes any status condition including paralysis, poison, and sleep the moment Staryu is withdrawn from active battle, protecting it effectively from attrition strategies that depend on wearing opponents down gradually over several turns. Its hidden ability, Analytic, grants a meaningful power boost to any move Staryu uses when it acts after its opponent in a given turn, rewarding careful and patient play.

Staryu sits at the first stage of a two-member evolutionary line and evolves into Starmie through exposure to a Water Stone. This stone-based evolution means that Staryu does not develop further through accumulated experience or emotional bonding alone but requires a deliberate choice on the trainer's part, placing it among the several Kanto species whose transformation depends entirely on an external catalyst. Starmie, the resulting form, gains the Psychic type alongside its Water typing, becoming significantly more versatile and powerful in both field exploration and competitive battle. Within the broader Pokédex, Staryu is catalogued among the original Kanto species and holds a position of considerable scientific interest due to its regenerative core, which continues to challenge standard frameworks for biological classification of Pokémon. For trainers, it represents an accessible and rewarding early investment, offering reliable performance in its base form and the promise of one of the more capable Water-type Pokémon available once the Water Stone is applied.
